The Volvo Golf Champions tournament scheduled to be staged at the Royal Golf Club next January is likely to be moved to a course in South Africa.

Sources say the organisers have had ‘cold feet’ over kicking off the European Tour’s 2012 season in Bahrain because of the unrest last March and the adverse international publicity the kingdom has received in recent weeks.

Officially they say they will hold a meeting shortly to discuss its future.

Despite stating publicly that the Race to Dubai and The European Tour would ‘start in Bahrain’ featuring winners from this season, Volvo Event Management president Per Ericsson this week was on the back foot.
He told GulfWeekly: “Due to what happened in Bahrain after our tournament, we, the European Tour and Volvo Event Management-Golf, have not yet made up our minds for 2012, but will do so in August at the latest. All parties will meet in a couple of weeks in order to discuss the issue, at this time no decisions are made.”
Unofficially, the organisers fear the sport’s star players could be swamped by protests orchestrated by international activists despite the fact that a national dialogue involving all sides with an interest in taking Bahrain forward to a peaceful and prosperous future starts in the next few days.

رفضت السلطة طوال خمسة عقود أن تتحاور مع أيٍ من فصائل المعارضة. إلا إننا نراها الآن تدعو إلى فخ تسميه “حوار حول التوافق الوطني”. فهي لا تبحث عن مخارج من المنحدر الجديد الذي دفعت البلاد إليه بعد أن إستدعت القوات السعودية لإنقاذها. بل هي لا تبحث حتى عن سبل لإعادة إجتذاب أطراف داخلية وطمأنتها وخاصة بعد أن أدت الحملة الأمنية إلى سقوط عشرات الشهداء ومئات الجرحى وإعتقال المئات ناهيك عن الآلاف من المتضررين بمن فيهم المفصولين من أعمالهم أو مدارسهم

فدعوة الحوار هي إستجابة لضغط حكومة الولايات المتحدة الأميركية التي تواجه إحراجاً أخلاقياً بصمتها المعيب عما يحدث في البحرين من إنتهاكات صارخة لحقوق الإنسان بينما يرتفع صوتها في إدانة أنظمة أخرى تمارس الإنتهاكات التي يمارسها حليفها في البحرين. إلا أن دعوة الحوار صيغت بحيث لا يقود مساره إلى نتائج تغضب الحاضنة السعودية أو تحدث شرخاً في وحدة العائلة الخليفية. أي أن المقصود هو القيام بحد أدني من الحركة والضجيج لذر الرماد في عين الراعي الأميركي دون أن يزعج الراعي السعودي.

قبل أسابيع كتب أخونا غسان الشهابي محذراً من أن يسلق الحوار وأن يؤخذ بخفة تجعله “ينتهي إلى توصيات وأطنان من الأوراق المحبّرة، شأنه شأن الكثير والكثير من المؤتمرات وورش العمل والملتقيات والمنتديات بل والقمم أيضاً التي يدعو إليها الجميع ولا ينقصها سوى الإيمان بها، والإرادة السياسية لتفعيلها”. وللأسف فليس ثمة ما يشير أن أحداً في السلطة يؤمن بالحوار. فطوال عقد “المشروع الإصلاحي” كان الملك أو عمه يعطيان الأوامر و التوجيهات وكان على الآخرين السمع والطاعة. ومن لم يسمع ولم يطع حلّت عليه لعنة الإعلام البلطجي أو نالت منه أجهزة الأمن

WASHINGTON — This year's harsh crackdown on Shiite Muslims in Bahrain follows the playbook that Sunni Muslim-ruled Saudi Arabia used against Shiites in its own Eastern Province as recently as two years ago, secret State Department cables show.
Some of the officials named in the cables as responsible for the 2009 Eastern Province crackdown now are advising Bahrain's leaders.

”Svensk undkom dödsstraff”

Bahrainsvensken riskerade dödstraff, men fick livstids fängelse. Detta troligen för att USA utövat påtryckningar, säger Mellanösternexperten Abdulhadi Khalaf, till DN.se

Mohammed Habib al-Muqdad som är politiskt aktiv har dubbelt medborgarskap – svenskt och bahrainskt. Men Bahrain erkänner inte det svenska utan väljer att se det hela som en intern angelägenhet, vilket försvårat för svenska myndigheter att kontakta honom, uppger TT.

Mohammed Habib al-Muqdad anklagas för kuppförsök och för terrorbrott. Under maj månad dömdes han till 20 års fängelse, nu förlängdes domen till livstid.

– En hård dom var väntad, det talades i förväg om dödsstraff, säger Abdulhadi Khalaf, Mellanösternsexpert på Centrum för Mellanösternstudier vid Lunds Universitet.
Flera av de anklagade vittnade inför rätten om tortyr och brutal behandling under tiden i arresten.
– Men domstolen har inte tillåt dem att föra fram dessa anklagelser. I stället har de officiella medierna hetsat folket mot de åtalade, uppger Mohammed al-Maskati, ordförande för människorättsgruppen Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights, enligt TT.

Människorättsorganisationer hade i förväg uppmanat Bahrain att stoppa militärrättegångarna och Human Rights Watch har klassat förfarandet som brott mot internationell rätt.

The High Commissioner would like to make clear that a meeting she had last Friday with Bahrain’s Minister of Social Development and acting health minister, Dr Fatima bint Mohammed Al Balooshi and three other Bahrain government officials, has been grossly misrepresented in a report by the Bahrain News Agency. The BNA article was subsequently picked up by a number of newspapers in the region, including the Khaleej Times and the Gulf Daily News, and even by some Sri Lankan government officials and media for their own purposes.

The Bahrain News Agency, which was not present at the meeting, stated that the High Commissioner had “recognized misinformation” about the Kingdom of Bahrain, and quoted her as saying “Certain information which we received about the developments in Bahrain are untrue.”

The High Commissioner would like to stress that she made no such statement, and is disturbed by this blatant distortion of her words. She will formally request the Government officials who attended the meeting to issue a correction.

The discussions at the meeting with the Bahraini Government delegation focused mainly on the proposed OHCHR mission to Bahrain, as well as a number of other issues relating to the recent protests, including the need for transparent independent investigations into the human rights violations that have taken place there. The mission has been accepted in principle by the Bahraini government but no dates have yet been set.

My Cartoon Movement comrades from outside the USA can certainly be forgiven for being so caught up in the recent FIFA bribery scandal that they may have missed this bit of even more appalling news from Bahrain concerning FIA, the governing body for Formula One racing, and its recent decision to go ahead with the Bahrain Grand Prix, which had been cancelled in March owing to a problem with widespread mass peoples’ uprisings.
Even more galling was a gleeful Bahraini racing officlal quoted by Al Jazeera as saying that “stability has returned” after the uprisings had been brutally crushed, and was practically wetting his pants with delight to hear FIA’s decision.
That’s right, folks — mass popular uprisings in Bahrain have finally been violently suppressed by the Bahraini police and military with the help of Saudi troops using weapons sold to them by Barack Obama, and now that that unpleasantness is out of the way… gentlemen, start your engines!*

Formula One faces rights backlash over Bahrain GP

The organisers of Formula One motor racing decided yesterday to reinstate the Grand Prix in Bahrain later this year, despite police battling pro-democracy protesters in the island as the decision was being taken.

The motor racing governing body, the FIA, claimed that the unanimous decision to reschedule the event, postponed earlier this year because of demonstrations, "reflects the spirit of reconciliation in Bahrain".

The FIA does not mention that a quarter of the staff of the Bahrain International Circuit, which hosts the event, have been detained and given graphic details of being beaten and tortured. Some 28 of them have been sacked or suspended and at least five are still in prison. Others have fled Bahrain.

Bahrain's security forces are increasingly targeting women in their campaign against pro-democracy protesters despite yesterday lifting martial law in the island kingdom.

Ayat al-Gormezi, 20, a poet and student arrested two months ago after reading out a poem at a pro-democracy rally, is due to go on trial today before a military tribunal, her mother said. Ayat was forced to turn herself in when masked policemen threatened to kill her brothers unless she did so.

حوار مع "مرآة البحرين" حول أساليب النضال اللاعنيف

ييأس كثيرون أمام بطش الأنظمة الديكتاتورية. أمام القوة القاهرة التي تجسدها آلة العسكر ووحدات البوليس المجهزة، قد يفكر البعض أن الحل يكمن في اللجوء إلى الخيارات العنيفة: "لا يفل الحديد غير الحديد". لكن ذلك غلط. إن الذهاب إلى العنف في قبال أجهزة تقليدية مدربة، معركة سوف تخسرها ما من شك.
"كعب أخيل" الأنظمة التي تلجأ إلى العنف عادة في ضرب حركات التمرد، هو مواجهتها بعكس عناصر قوتها. إذا كانت مصادر قوتها تتمثل في وجود جيش قوي وجهاز أمن فعّال، فإن نقطة ضعفها تكمن في مواجهتها بخلاف هذا اللون من القوة بالذات، بأساليب "اللاعنف".

"مرآة البحرين" فتحت موضوع "المقاومة اللاعنيفة" مع أستاذ علم الاجتماع الدكتور عبدالهادي خلف، مع أخذ حركة 14 فبراير/ شباط المطلبية نموذجاً للتحليل. فيما يلي مقتطفات من الحوار معه:

مرآة البحرين: سعيت في كتابك "المقاومة المدنية" إلى مناقشة ظاهرة "العمل الجماهيري" وأشكال استخدامها كأداة نضالية من أجل التغيير. ماذا تعني هذه المقاومة؟ وهل يبدو اهتمامك بالمقاومة المدنية منذ نهاية الثمانينات، مبكراً، قياسا إلى ربيع الثورات العربية السلمية الذي لم يأت قبل2011؟
عبدالهادي خلف: المقاومة هي فعل إرادي جمعي يهدف إلى تغيير معطيات في الواقع السياسي والاجتماعي القائم بدءاً من حرمان السلطة من قدرتها على إخضاع الناس. والمقاومة المدنية هي تلك التي تتحاشى استخدام العنف للوصول إلى أهدافها وتعتمد على انخراط أكبر عدد ممكن من الناس بشكل طوعي في أنشطتها الجمعية. وتستند المقاومة المدنية على بديهية تؤكدها خبرة ممتدة في التاريخ الإنساني. وهي البديهية التي تقول باختصار شديد أن قدرة أي سلطة على ممارسة سلطاتها مرهونة بقبول الناس لتلك السلطة وطاعتهم لها إما بسبب اقتناعهم بشرعيتها أو خوفهم من بطشها أو طمعاً في خيراتها.

أما كتابي عن "المقاومة المدنية" فكان أحد المخرجات الثانوية ضمن مشروع بحثي دام عدة سنوات ساهمتُ فيه مع زملاء آخرين لدراسة أوضاع الشعب الفلسطيني في الشتات وفي الأراضي المحتلة. كان الهدف من الكتاب هو ترويج فكرة المقاومة المدنية كأحد الخيارات النضالية الممكنة والفعالة. ولقد تزامن نشر الكتاب في 1986 مع تزايد اهتمام القيادات الفلسطينية (وأخص بالذكر الشهيديْن أبوعمار وأبو جهاد) بأدبيات المقاومة المدنية بما فيها تراث المهاتما غاندي والقس مارتن لوثر كينغ وسيرتهما.

لم يكن الأمر سهلاً في ذلك الوقت فلقد اعتبر كثيرون أن الدعوة لدراسة إمكانيات المقاومة المدنية هي محاولة "مشبوهة" لنزع الشرعية عن سلاح المقاومة. إلا إن اندلاع الانتفاضة الأولى في 1987 في الأراضي الفلسطينية المحتلة أعاد الاعتبار للمقاومة غير المسلحة وأعطاها قيمتها النضالية التي تستحقها كخيار ممكن وفعال ضمن خيارات النضال ضد الاحتلال ومن أجل التغيير.
